My professional training was as an accountant, and my wife and I are involved in the tourism industry. I am now serving my fourth term on the New Plymouth District Council, and my second as Mayor. I have chaired our Sister Cities Committee, and have been heavily involved in the continuing development of New Plymouth’s Sister City relationship with Mishima (Japan).
Since I took on the Mayoralty, New Plymouth has formalised a sister city relationship with Kunming (China) which is proving fruitful for both our communities. New Plymouth has also developed a number of connections internationally. I relish the opportunity to work with the board to continue to drive Sister Cities New Zealand forward. As an organisation we are in a unique position to make a real difference.

I am a Marlborough District Councillor and Chairperson of the Marlborough Sister City committee. Through Sister Cities and people to people exchange, an understanding of different cultures and the way of life of others can be appreciated better than by learning through books. As a result of these friendships we can build a better world and a happier community.

My involvement with Sister City activities started in 1983 and since then I have participated in and hosted many delegation and goodwill visits.
Dunedin has four sister cities - in Japan (Otaru), China (Shanghai), Scotland (Edinburgh) and USA (Portsmouth).
I served as President of the Dunedin -Otaru Sister City Society for 20 years from its inception in 1986, and continue to serve on the Dunedin-Otaru Sister City Committee as well as the Executive Committee of both the Dunedin-Shanghai Association and Dunedin-Edinburgh Sister City Society.
I have enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) being involved in many varied exchanges with our sister cities - cultural, education, sports, youth and trade. |
